UPI revolutionized payments in India – but also opened doors for fraudsters!
Every day, thousands lose money to UPI scams. From fake payment requests to QR code frauds, scammers are getting smarter. Let's learn how to stay safe and what to do if you're scammed.
What is UPI Fraud?
UPI fraud = Unauthorized or fraudulent transactions through UPI apps (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, etc.) resulting in money loss.
Rising trend:
Increased UPI usage = more frauds
Sophisticated scams
Victims across all age groups
Losses from hundreds to lakhs
Common Types of UPI Frauds:
1. Fake Customer Care Scam
How it works:
You search "PhonePe customer care" or "Google Pay helpline" on Google
Call fake number (fraudsters run Google Ads!)
"Executive" asks for UPI PIN, OTP, or asks you to install remote access app (AnyDesk, TeamViewer)
Accesses your phone
Transfers money
Red flag: Real customer care NEVER asks for PIN/OTP or remote access!
2. Wrong Payment / Refund Request Scam
How it works:
You receive UPI payment (₹500, ₹1000) from unknown person
Person calls: "I sent money by mistake, please refund"
Sends you "money request" link
You click thinking you're refunding
Actually, YOU'RE PAYING them more money!
Trick: UPI payment request LOOKS like you're sending money back, but you're paying from your account.
3. QR Code Scam
How it works:
You're selling something (on OLX, Facebook, etc.)
Buyer says "I'll pay via UPI, send your QR code"
You send payment QR code
They send THEIR QR code saying "scan to receive payment"
You scan thinking you'll receive money
Instead, MONEY GOES FROM YOUR ACCOUNT to theirs!
Trick: Payment QR and Request QR look similar but work opposite!
4. UPI Collect Request Scam
How it works:
Fraudster sends UPI collect/payment request
Request shows tempting message: "You won ₹10,000" or "Refund processing"
You approve without checking
Money debited from your account
Trick: Always read carefully – is it payment TO you or FROM you?
5. APK/App Download Scam
How it works:
Fraudster poses as bank/company
Sends link to "update app" or "claim reward"
You download APK file
Actually malware/spyware
Steals banking details, OTPs, passwords
Empties account
Red flag: Never download apps from links! Only from Play Store/App Store.
6. Screen Sharing Scam
How it works:
Scammer calls as "bank executive" or "tech support"
Claims issue with account/KYC/payment
Asks you to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer, QuickSupport
You install and share code
They see your screen including OTPs, PINs
Transfer money while you watch helplessly!
Red flag: Never share screen with anyone!
7. Fake Payment Screenshot
How it works:
You're selling product
Buyer shows "payment successful" screenshot
You deliver product/service
Later realize: Screenshot was FAKE (edited image)
No money received
Prevention: Wait for SMS/app notification. Don't trust screenshots!
8. Lottery/Prize/KBC Scam
How it works:
Message: "You won KBC lottery ₹25 lakh"
Call from "KBC office"
To claim prize, pay "processing fee" ₹5,000 via UPI
You pay, never hear from them again
Reality: No lottery asks for money to claim prize!
9. Job Offer Scam
How it works:
"Congratulations! Selected for job at [big company]"
"Pay ₹2,000 registration fee via UPI"
You pay
Job never materializes
Reality: Legitimate companies don't charge candidates!
10. Investment/Trading Scam
How it works:
WhatsApp group for "stock tips" or "crypto trading"
Initial small profits shown
Asked to invest larger amount via UPI
Money transferred to fraudster's account
Group disappears
11. OLX/Quikr Fraud
How it works:
You list item for sale
"Buyer" interested
Sends link to "authenticate sale"
Actually payment request
You lose money instead of receiving
12. Overpayment Scam
How it works:
You're selling item for ₹5,000
Buyer "accidentally" pays ₹50,000
Panics, begs for refund of ₹45,000
You refund
Later discover: Original ₹50,000 payment was fraudulent/reversed
You lose ₹45,000
13. Romance/Dating Scam
How it works:
Meet someone on dating app
Build relationship
They need "emergency money"
You send via UPI
Person disappears
14. Parcel/Courier Scam (UPI version)
How it works:
Call: "Your parcel has illegal items"
"Police case against you"
"Pay ₹10,000 fine via UPI to avoid arrest"
You panic and pay
Reality: Police don't call for UPI payments!
How to Identify UPI Fraud:
Red flags:
🚩 Unknown person sends money then asks refund🚩 Customer care asks for UPI PIN/OTP/password🚩 Pressure to act immediately ("Your account will be blocked!")🚩 Too good to be true offers (lottery, prizes)🚩 Payment request disguised as payment receipt🚩 Apps from outside Play Store🚩 Screen sharing requests🚩 Payment before service/product delivery🚩 Unknown UPI IDs requesting money🚩 Spelling errors in official-looking messages
How UPI Works (Understanding Helps Prevent Fraud):
Two types of transactions:
1. You SEND money (Debit):
You scan QR / enter UPI ID
Enter amount
Enter UPI PIN
Money goes FROM your account TO recipient
2. You RECEIVE money (Credit):
Someone sends to your UPI ID/number
No PIN needed from you
Money comes TO your account
Just notification
Key point:
SENDING requires PIN (you authorize)
RECEIVING needs NO action from you
If someone asks you to "accept payment" by entering PIN – IT'S A SCAM!
Prevention Tips – Stay Safe:
General Safety:
✓ Never share UPI PIN with anyone (not even bank/customer care)✓ Never share OTP received for any transaction✓ Don't install apps from links (only Play Store)✓ No screen sharing with anyone✓ Verify customer care numbers from official website only✓ Check transaction type before entering PIN (sending vs receiving)✓ Set transaction limits in UPI app✓ Enable transaction alerts (SMS, email, app notifications)✓ Use strong phone lock (fingerprint/password)
When Receiving Money:
✓ Wait for notification (SMS/app) – don't trust screenshots✓ Check your bank balance before delivering product✓ No PIN needed to receive – if asked for PIN, it's fraud!✓ Verify payment in your bank app
When Sending Money:
✓ Verify recipient UPI ID/QR code carefully✓ Double-check amount before entering PIN✓ Read transaction description (is it payment TO or FROM?)✓ Don't rush – fraudsters create urgency
For Online Shopping/Selling:
