Introduction

Online gaming in India has exploded in recent years. From fantasy cricket apps like Dream11 and MPL to real-money card games, casual mobile games, and international gaming platforms — crores of Indians are now gaming online every day.

But with this boom has come a dark side: online gaming fraud.

Whether someone hacked into your gaming account, a platform vanished overnight with your deposited money, you were cheated by a fake gaming app, or you lost money due to rigged gameplay — you have every right to fight back and report it.

The problem? Most people don't know where to go or how to complain. This guide breaks it all down in simple steps.

What Counts as Online Gaming Fraud?

Before filing a complaint, it helps to understand what qualifies as fraud. Here are the most common types seen in India:

  • Fake gaming apps that collect deposits and disappear

  • Account hacking — someone takes over your gaming profile and steals your in-game currency, coins, or real money

  • Rigged games where outcomes are manipulated against players

  • Fake tournament prizes — you "win" but never receive the prize money

  • Phishing links disguised as gaming offers that steal your bank or UPI details

  • Unauthorised charges on your credit/debit card linked to a gaming platform

  • Fantasy sports manipulation — teams or contests are rigged by the platform or insiders

If any of the above has happened to you, here is exactly what to do.

Step 1: Don't Panic — Act Quickly

Time is critical in cyber fraud cases. The faster you act, the better the chances of recovering your money or stopping further damage.

Immediately do the following:

  • Change passwords for your gaming account, email, and linked bank accounts

  • Take screenshots of all transactions, chats, emails, and suspicious activity

  • Note down the gaming platform's name, URL, app link, and any payment details (transaction IDs, UPI IDs, bank account numbers)

  • Do NOT delete any messages or transaction records — these are your evidence

Step 2: Call the Cyber Crime Helpline — 1930

The National Cyber Crime Helpline Number is 1930, launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. This is your first and fastest point of contact.

Call 1930 immediately if:

  • You have lost money through fraud

  • Your gaming account was hacked and money was stolen

  • You were tricked into a payment through a fake gaming platform

The helpline is available 24x7. When you call, they will log your complaint and, in many cases, can initiate an alert to banks to freeze or trace the fraud transaction before it's too late.

Step 3: File a Complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal

The official government portal for cyber crime complaints in India is:

This portal is managed by the Ministry of Home Affairs and handles all cyber crime complaints including online gaming fraud, financial fraud, hacking, and more.

How to File a Complaint:

  1. Go to https://cybercrime.gov.in

  2. Click on "File a Complaint"

  3. For financial/gaming fraud, select "Report Other Cyber Crime"

  4. Register with your mobile number (OTP verification)

  5. Fill in your personal details and describe the incident in detail

  6. Upload supporting evidence — screenshots, transaction records, emails, app details

  7. Submit the complaint and note your complaint reference number

After filing, you can track your complaint status on the same portal using your reference number. Local police cyber cells are alerted based on your complaint and are expected to follow up.

Pro Tip: Be as specific and detailed as possible. Mention exact dates, amounts, platform names, UPI IDs, or bank account numbers involved. Vague complaints take longer to process.

Step 4: File an FIR at Your Nearest Police Station

While the cyber crime portal is the recommended first step, you also have every right to walk into your nearest police station and file an FIR (First Information Report) under relevant sections of law.

If the local police are reluctant or unfamiliar with cyber crime, ask to be directed to the Cyber Crime Cell of your city or district. Every major city in India — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune — has a dedicated Cyber Crime Cell.

Relevant legal sections that may apply to your case:

Offence

Applicable Law

Cheating and fraud

Section 420, IPC (now Section 318, BNS 2023)

Identity theft / account hacking

Section 66C, IT Act 2000

Online fraud / cheating by impersonation

Section 66D, IT Act 2000

Unauthorised access to computer system

Section 66, IT Act 2000

Criminal intimidation

Section 507, IPC

Insist that the police register an FIR. If they refuse, you can escalate to the Superintendent of Police (SP) or file a complaint directly with the concerned court.

Step 5: Contact Your Bank or Payment Provider Immediately

If money was debited from your bank account, UPI wallet, or credit card through fraudulent gaming transactions, contact your bank right away.

What to ask for:

  • Raise a chargeback request if the payment was made via credit or debit card

  • Request a transaction dispute if UPI or net banking was involved

  • Ask the bank to flag or freeze the suspicious transaction

Important: RBI guidelines mandate that banks acknowledge fraud complaints within 3 working days. Victims who report unauthorised transactions within 3 days are eligible for full reimbursement in many cases, depending on the transaction type.

You can also escalate unresolved bank complaints to the RBI Banking Ombudsman at: 🔗 https://cms.rbi.org.in

Step 6: Report to Google Play Store or Apple App Store

If the fraud happened through a fake or malicious gaming app, report it directly to the app store so it gets removed and protects other users.

On Google Play Store:

  • Open the app page → Scroll down → Tap "Flag as inappropriate" → Select "Fraud or scam"

On Apple App Store:

  • Open the app page → Tap the three dots (…) → Tap "Report a Problem" → Select the appropriate reason

This step is especially important for fake fantasy sports apps, fake teen patti or rummy apps, and any gaming app that collected money and disappeared.

Step 7: File a Consumer Complaint

If the gaming platform is a registered business in India (domestic company), you can also file a consumer complaint, as gaming platforms are considered service providers under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

File online at: 🔗 https://consumerhelpline.gov.in (National Consumer Helpline — NCH) Or call 1800-11-4000 (toll-free)

You can also file a formal case in the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in your city for complaints up to ₹50 lakh. For higher amounts, approach the State or National Consumer Commission.

Step 8: Report to CERT-In (For Technical Cyber Incidents)

CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team) is the national agency that handles cybersecurity incidents, including hacking, phishing, and malware.

If your gaming account was hacked, or you received phishing links through gaming platforms, you can report to CERT-In at:

Bonus: Report Suspicious Gaming Ads or Social Media Scams

Many gaming frauds start with fake advertisements on social media — Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Facebook, or Telegram — promising guaranteed winnings or fake bonus offers.

Report these here:

  • Facebook/Instagram: Use the three-dot menu on the post → "Report" → "Scam or fraud"

  • YouTube: Click the three dots below the video → "Report" → "Scam or fraud"

  • WhatsApp: Open the chat → three dots → "Report" → confirm

  • Telegram: Open the profile → "Report" → select reason

Also report suspicious domains or websites to the Cyber Crime Portal mentioned in Step 3.

Tips to Avoid Online Gaming Fraud in the Future

Prevention is always better than cure. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Play only on AIGF-certified or well-known platforms. The All-India Gaming Federation (AIGF) certifies legitimate skill-based gaming operators in India.

  • Never share your OTP, password, or banking details with anyone — even "customer support."

  • Be wary of guaranteed win offers. No legitimate platform can guarantee winnings.

  • Check app reviews and ratings before downloading a gaming app.

  • Use a separate, low-balance UPI ID or prepaid card for gaming transactions.

  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on all gaming accounts.

  • Verify payment UPI IDs carefully before sending money — scammers often use IDs similar to genuine platforms.

Final Words

Online gaming fraud is a real and growing problem in India, but you are not helpless. The Indian government has built a strong ecosystem of redressal — from the Cyber Crime Portal to consumer courts to the RBI Ombudsman. The key is to act fast, document everything, and use the right channels.

File your complaint. Your report not only helps recover your own money but also helps shut down fraudsters and protect thousands of other players.

Stay safe. Game smart.
